"What are your values and how do they define you? Where do they fit in terms of your council's values? In terms of the community's values?"
The dictionary states that values stands for relative worth, merit or importance; monetary or material worth; the worth of something in terms of the amount of other things for which it can be exchanged. I find it interesting that a summary of this definition is directly correlated to some sort of financial relationship. This is definitely opposite of what I value. Money is actually one of the last items on my list. As the old saying goes "Money Comes and Goes"! Even though currency has become a very central and important part of our society, individually I have been able to set myself apart from materialist things and embrace my own personal values and beliefs that have emerged throughout my growth.
First and foremost I value my relationships. The most important relationship I have is with God. Everything that I have acquired and accomplished is because of him and I am humbly grateful for that. I value my family. The encouragement and unconditional love I receive from them is what drives me. And last but not least my close friends and sorority sisters; the sisterhood we have built and bond we share is indescribable.
The next value I stand by includes my duties of what gives me my "social status" with my job and education. I take my academic career seriously and I am a student in the hopes of pursuing a certain career and I will value that occupation one day knowing that I worked hard to get where I will be. Though these are only a few, these are my "core values" and they have paved the way for my other beliefs, morals , and values that I live bt. My "core values" define me (Rian Charnelle Keller) as the woman I have become!
In terms of my council, "core values" such as those I have previously described are important to have instilled in each member of the council. If a member didn't have values, guidance, or anything that they stood/live by, they wouldn't fully know how to lead and execute the goals of their chapter let alone the National Pan-Hellenic Council. With that said, my council has very different values to stand by and work for. The National Pan-Hellenic Council believes in unity, the community, and service just to name a few.
Along with the community we serve and the NPHC, each member brings their own "core values" to the table to build unity and to serve the community based on collaborative goals. This is what makes us who we are (The National Pan-Hellenic Council), the history we are driven by and the legacy we will continue!
